Miri City Smart Bus Launching Ceremony by YAB Premier Sarawak
On October 9, 2023, a significant handover ceremony took place at Miri Sentral on the Miri By-Pass Road, marking the launch of the Miri City Smart Bus initiative under the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS). The event was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, alongside Minister of Transport Sarawak YB Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, and attended prominent guests, including members of the public and local media representatives.
As announced by the Premier in February, the Miri City Smart Bus service will offer free travel, with operations commencing on October 1, 2024. This new fleet replaces 14 aging buses that are over 25 years old. The Smart Buses are equipped with GPS technology for real-time tracking via the Smart Bus App, as well as safety features including cameras and sensors. Additionally, to accommodate passengers with disabilities, the buses feature lifts or ramps for wheelchair access and priority seating at the front for the elderly and special needs group.
The handover ceremony represents a crucial step for the Sarawak government in enhancing transportation management and coordination, ensuring public services meet community needs. Sarawak Transport Minister, YB Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasized that the introduction of free bus services aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve schedule reliability through the implementation of Transit Signal Priority (TSP). The initiative also seeks to alleviate financial burdens for the B40 demographic and promote local tourism. This project aligns with the Miri Smart City blueprint, aiming to establish Miri as a Green, Smart, and Most Liveable International Resort City by 2030.
